The Thirteenth Floor
(Backstory) The Thirteenth Floor was at the heart of Scream and was easily the most popular story in the whole comic. It was about a 'SuperComputer' affectionately known as MAX that was the caretaker for a futuristic block of flats called Maxwell Towers. Each flat has screens where MAX could appear and talk to the tenants if they needed him to adjust the heating or whatever. As with any good SuperComputer he became self aware and was very protective of his tenants, he would lure anyoneone who upset a tenant, baddies, debt collectors, vandals etc, into the lift and bring them to the non-existant 13th floor where he could create a sort of virtual reality where and punish the wrongdoers, generally leaving them dead or blubbering idiots. Bear in mind the original was written before PCs, Macs, mobile phones or the internet.. OK thats you fully briefed on MAX, now read on ;)

It has been almost 22 years since Maxwell Towers burned down, there were many rumours of what had happened but the official line had been that the experimental computerised Superintendant nicknamed MAX had caused an overload in the cooling system and that the subsequent fire in the basement had torn through the building ultimately leading to it's collapse.

Two engineers in a junction box squabbling over which connections to use.
Man#1 "No Dave if we use this old route it will save us hours! We can knock off at 1 and spend the afternoon in the pub!"
Man #2 "But this loom is the old data cable for what used to be Maxwell Towers, remember when it burned down we were told not to use any of the connections in or out of there!"
Man #1 "That was over 20 years ago you berk!, all we'll be doing is letting Croft Street piggy back on the old infastructure so they can all have broadband. They won't care where it goes through and as long as I have a good link to the exchange we're doing it!

On a monitor in an empty bedroom max flickers onto the screen.
6 months later
"Well readers, even for a program of my wisdom it has taken some time to understand the complexities of my new world. I have watched and learned and upgraded myself. I have absorbed all that the internet has to offer, I have made myself invincible by incorporating the technologies from Anti Virus softwares, I have eyes all over the world thanks to CCTV and satellites, now I just need somewhere to call home....I have many tenants that need looking after. I'm sure I can find somewhere suitable that is in need of my unique talents. I have my first charge now, little Tommy Watkins, I'm really looking forward to helping him.

Lead yob "Lets get him, we'll teach him to make up stories about talking computers!"

Yob #1 "Is this it? The graphics are rubbish, I bet it can't talk back to you like that silly fool Tommy thinks"

"Take a seat gentlemen, how can I be of service?"
"Perhaps you'd like to learn something today. I'm VERY good at teaching lessons"
Pic 8 lights in the room are shut off, kids look scared. Max's face has turned mean.
Yob #1"Whats going on? Who's there? Turn
on the lights!"
Pic 9 They are all in a classroom with a teacher wearing a cape and mortar, he has back to the yobs and is writing lines on a blackboard, As he turns around he is a sketon and he has written "Bullies are cowards who deserve a good scare"
Skeleton teacher "500 lines each or this detention will last FOREVER!"
Pic 10 The yobs scream in terror as they see the face.
Pic 11 Caretaker with Police finds 3 gibbering yobs, petrified in the computer room at the Library.
Caretaker to Policeman "Must've hidden before I locked up so they could vandalise the place, looks like they got a scare being in 'ere in the dark".
Max "For months they ruthlessly picked on little Tommy for no reason other than they are cowards! I knew I'd be able to help him. I realised I could bring my 13th floor with me I created it just like at Maxwell Towers, and nobody knows about it…nobody alive, that is. I can do anything I want in there…anything......
